There are many kinds of jobs around your property that you can quickly and easily do yourself.

Even larger projects can be tackled successfully once you’ve got a bit of experience! However, when it comes to earthmoving, hiring a professional team can save you time, money and stress. Here are some of the main reasons why hiring BWC will help you out;

Cost

Yes, believe it or not, hiring a professional ultimately lowers the cost of your project. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, a professional excavation company will have ALL the necessary equipment and tools to get the job completed. No running off to the hardware store mid-project! Secondly, a professional operator will have the experience and skill to get the job done in a timely manner. Time is money after all! Most importantly, an experienced excavation company can identify any potential hazards and ensure all necessary safety precautions are taken. Read more about cost

Quality

A professional excavation company will complete their work to an exacting standard. Make sure your contractor, and any other staff that will be working on the job, are fully certified. Don’t be afraid to ask! A reputable operator will also guarantee their work so you can be confident any defects will not cost you extra money.

Variety

When you hire a professional excavation company, you also receive all the benefits that come with having a wide range of knowledge and skills. This means you could potentially schedule in a number of projects at the same For example, BWC offers an extensive range of excavation and earthmoving services like land clearing, service trenches, site preparation, driveways and post + stump holes. BWC is also fully qualified and licensed to work with asbestos too.

Who You Know

The majority of projects an excavation company works on require other contractors. A professional knows other professionals and will be able to contact other reputable tradespeople such as builders, plumbers and landscapers on your behalf.

Here at BWC Civil, safety on all of our work sites is of the utmost importance. This is something that is made abundantly clear when we learn about some of the accidents that take place on civil construction sites. One such example of this is the excavator accident that was reported by the Civil Contractors Federation.

The Incident

An earthworks contractor was working at a building site in Perth preparing a block of land for infill residential work. While undertaking this task, a high voltage (HV) cable was severed. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident, however, it did cause a power outage that affected 2000 Western Power customers. As such, this incident put not only on-site workers at risk, it also came at a great financial cost and impacted a number of Western Australian businesses and homeowners.

How Could the Incident Have Been Avoided?

When undertaking any excavation work, workers should always undertake a Dial Before You Dig (DBYD) enquiry. In the above case, this enquiry would have confirmed the location of the cable, and prevented it from being severed. The worker in question claims he never received a DBYD form from the on-site administration staff and didn’t realise that he would have to do it himself.

At BWC Civil, we always endeavour to tick every administrative box before any work commences, and we equip all staff with the information they need. Some of the steps we follow, which are recommended by DBYD, include:

Lodge a DBYD enquiry at least two days before any excavation work commences. Careful planning is the most straightforward way to prevent any accidents, both ones that put people’s safety at risk, as well as ones that slow down productivity.

Follow any advice listed on the asset owner’s plan or information pack, to ensure all staff knows where any underground infrastructure is located.

Any underground infrastructure should also be made visible by erecting barriers, marking the exposed infrastructure’s location, or, at the very least making sure everyone on site knows exactly where it is.

As well as the above steps, the actual excavator operator should also follow a set of prescribed steps to avoid any accidents or mistakes. These include:

Checking to see if someone has already lodged a DBYD form, and if it hasn’t been done already, lodge it ASAP.

Viewing the information contained in the DBYD, ensuring they’ve identified any underground services.

Taken whatever measures are required to ensure any risks are managed.

Any mistakes made on an excavation site can be costly, slow down project works and put people’s safety at risk. When working with BWC Civil, you can rest assured the efficiency of your project will be in good hands.

Can you imagine living in a world without an effective sewage system? Luckily for us, this is something we’ve never experienced, and probably won’t ever have to.

The modern concept of sewer systems came into play in the mid-to-late 19th century, but the concept of water sanitation has been around for a lot longer – as early as the Minoan Civilisation in Ancient Greece, to be exact. The sanitation systems introduced by the Ancient Greeks was actually surprisingly advanced, as they effectively introduced underground clay pipes for sanitation and water supply. In fact, in their capital, Knossos, they had well-organised systems for accessing clean water and disposing of waste and storm water through sewage canals. They were also one of the first civilisations to introduce a flush toilet, way back in the 18th century BC.

However, early sewage systems were nowhere near as advanced and beneficial as the systems that we have in place today, especially in terms of increasing public health and hygiene and eliminating the spread of diseases like diarrhoea.

How Do Modern Sewage Systems Work?

Most of us are probably familiar with the concept of sewage. It encompasses everything from human waste from bathrooms, kitchen wastewater, and water disposed from baths, basins, showers and the laundry. Untreated sewage can help disseminate disease, but processed sewage can be a valuable resource that can be recycled and reused.

At a residential and small-scale commercial (offices, retail stores and etc) level, wastewater can fall into one of the following three categories:

Grey water: this is the most desirable type of wastewater for recycling, and generally comes from showers, baths, basins, and laundries.

Blackwater: this is primarily toilet waste. It can contain infectious agents but can be recycled to a limited extent for specific uses.

Sewage: this is a combination of grey and blackwater and is highly infectious. Recycling potential is limited but not impossible.

When it comes to recycling sewage, the recycled water can be used for use around the home and garden. Generally speaking, sewage is processed in treatment plants and the effluent is pumped into the sea. Because sewage is biodegradable, it can be processed with naturally occurring bacteria, at which point it can be re-supplied to outdoor water taps, laundries, washing machines and etc.

Sewage water can even be recycled at a domestic level through the use of septic systems, aerated wastewater systems, and composting toilets.

What are the Benefits of Treating Sewage?

The main benefits of sewage treatment stem from our ability to rid water of disease-carrying pathogens. This allows us to prevent the spread of disease through communities, while also ensuring we’re not polluting our waterways. Rather than disease-ridden wastewater being released into the sea or rivers, the treated water is re-used, while the effluent (which has to meet a strict set of criteria) is released into our waterways without any negative effects. This not only means that we can prevent the spread of human disease, it also protects sea life.

However, in order for us to maintain our highly-advanced wastewater procedures, there needs to be effective drainage and sewage systems in place at a government level, so that wastewater can safely travel from point A to point B. This is where BWC Civil comes in.

As a civil and earthmoving company, bulk earthworks make up a big part of our business. So, what exactly are bulk earthworks, and why is this work needed?

We answer these questions and more, so you know exactly what to expect when you work with us to complete any earthmoving projects.

Bulk Earthworks

When we talk about bulk earthworks, we’re talking about removing, moving, or adding large quantities of soil and/or rock from one area to another. This is done to make a construction site a suitable level and height ready for project works to begin.

This process is usually performed in one of the following two ways:

Excavating the applicable section of land by cutting into it.

Constructing a new workable area, like an embankment. Earth-based materials will be added to the proposed construction site to make this possible.

Throughout this process, every care is taken to ensure we reuse as much of the excavated earth as possible. This not only prevents the costly collection of waste material, it also reduces the cost of purchasing and delivering extra earth materials when new construction areas need to be filled with extra dirt and rocks.

Luckily, there is computer software that can calculate how much earth will be removed/needed to fill a new site in advance, so we don’t need to hang onto or order any extra materials unnecessarily.

What Sort of Projects Require Bulk Earthworks?

Bulk earthworks are a necessary step in a number of civil construction projects, including:

New roads

Berms

Mines

Highways

Railways

Causeways

Levees

Dams

Canals

Trenches

Residential and commercial building projects

Can More Than One Type of Excavation be Used to Complete a Bulk Earthworks Project?

Excavations can be classified in a few different ways. The first classification is dependent on the type of material that’s being excavated and the second depends on the purpose of the excavation.

When the excavation is classified by the material type, correctly identifying the material is essential for keeping costs down and preventing any technical problems from occurring further down the track. There are four basic categories that can be used to determine what type of material excavators will be dealing with:

Loose, free-flowing soil or sand (Easy)

Gravel with clay (Medium)

Wet and heavy clay with broken rocks, gravel and even boulders (Medium to Hard)

Materials that require breaking down/blasting (Hard)

Excavations can also be classified by the type of topsoil, rock, earth or muck that needs to be dug out, as well as unclassified excavations where there is a mixture of earth-based materials present.

However, when classifying an excavation by its purpose, projects would be defined based on the end goal of the project works. For example, roadways, bridges or drainage.
